Interactive Watersheds Map Page

The next page to visit in this workshop is the U.S. Map page which shows the locations of large scale community based watershed projects across the country. You should be able to alternately bring this page forward to read this text and bring the Map page forward to look at the features being described. If your screen resolution is high enough you may be able to see both of these pages side by side.

This page has the same navigation menu and a smaller version of the Interactive Watersheds banner on the top as the “Home” page. In addition, you may note that some of the credit information is repeated. This was done, because all of the individual web sites have several pages which link back to this map, for easy navigation to the other watershed sites.

On the left side of the page, active text links identify the 5 watersheds that participated in the first stages of this project with NFWF and NARC&DC funding. On the right side of the page active links identify two additional demonstration watersheds, the White River and Pacific Coast Watersheds. These two areas were involved in early stages of the project when limited U.S. Forest Service funds were available to start demonstration photography and preliminary web site production. For the purposes of this workshop we won’t highlight the production elements in more detail at this time. You will notice that the spots on the Map for these two areas are active for your viewing.

The main feature of this page is the U.S. Map which contains 7 active watershed locations and 9 locations that are not active yet. The way to find the active ones is to roll your mouse over the map. As it locates an active watershed the name and the dot will change color from gold to white. Inactive sites will not change color. The rollover effects are created with a web based application called Image Ready. For the past few years this has been integrated into the Photoshop image processing program. (See Digital Image Processing workshop topic.)

The U.S. Map background was created using a source of digital terrain maps available on the Internet. Cartesia Software provided the basic U.S. map template.

The Photoshop application was used to modify the elevation colors on the map and to layer in state boundaries and major rivers.

Finally, the web site Authoring program titled Adobe GoLive was used to lay out the graphics, text and photographs on a web page. GoLive was also used to create the interactive hot links to other information resources. (See Advanced Web Site workshop topic.)
