Watershed Background Page

At this time, please open the “Background” page from the Upper Sevier site. You should be able to alternately bring this page forward to read this text and bring the Background page forward to look at the features being described. If your screen resolution is high enough you may be able to see both of these pages side by side.

The purpose of this page is to provide one place where general background information about the watershed project can be located. This expands and supplements the introductory information found on the “Welcome" or "Home” page. Most of the reference material contained on this page was developed before the Interactive Watershed project began. For example, historical documents can be linked to, if found.

Notice that there are two columns of HTML text which provides a brief background statement. On the bottom of the right side a bar indicates that background reference links to additional documents are available. These may be links to other web sites or to specific locations on other web sites where documents are stored. These links may also open up Acrobat PDF, or Microsoft Word files which are stored at the Upper Sevier site. These file types have been prepared (usually by the author) to be able to be read on the Internet when they are stored properly and correct links are provided to access them. The individual who wants to read these files must have the correct reader. On this page a link to download the Acrobat reader is provided. If a “Word” document is available, the special web reader for that may also be needed. Many other file types have similar readers, such as PowerPoint and QuickTime. The page where the links to these files are located should alert the viewer that they will need the appropriate reader or player. We have also indicated the download file size of these documents.

At the top left of this page notice that the graphic Element for the Upper Sevier River Community Watershed Project has been reduced in size from the “Welcome” page. This same smaller size is used on all of the remaining main pages of the web site as a common visual graphic identification. A different image with a slight transparent edge on the left is also used on all of the main pages. The larger graphic word “Background” is used to identify this particular page. On the top right is a link back to the Interactive Watersheds U.S. Map page. This reference is also used on all of the main pages of all of the other watershed web sites.

The main navigation bar also remains constant on all of the main pages of the web site. This allows a user to go back to any of the main sections of the site no matter what page they are currently at. The exception to this is when self contained PDF, Word, Powerpoint, or other files are played, or a new window is opened on top of your browser. Seldom will these files, usually authored first for other purposes, contain the navigation menu of the particular web site where the links are located.

Notice that the text on the main navigation bar will change color as you roll over the words, but the rollover effect does not change the picture, as it did on the “Welcome” page. Downloading a number of pictures to get this effect takes more time with a slow Internet browser. This is interesting and useful on the welcome page, but we felt it was not necessary for the remaining main pages.

However, one static image has been placed on the left side of the verticle black line of this page. Only a few small images are provided on these main pages to keep the layout and readability fairly simple. This allows the user to move through the main pages fairly quickly for an overview of the project. On all of the sites there is a tremendous wealth of graphic and visual information, especially in the Interactive Journey and Resource Issues sections.

Note that other web pages you visit in this detailed overview may have some of the same page elements described above. Generally these will not be described again on each page. To get a good understanding of all of these features it will be imperative to visit all of the pages in this Detailed Overview section.
