The historic Bear Valley Guard Station was once used by forest rangers as they checked range allotments. Numerous other guard stations exist throughout the forest, built a day's horseback ride apart. The next station is near the Vermillion Cliffs Campground. Interestingly, several private homesteads, claimed after the Homestead Act of 1871, exist in this area within Forest Service boundaries, and some are still used today by summer residents. The Forest Service plans to restore the historic guard station to be rented by the public during summer months. |
