Sunlit rocks in Smith Canyon.

The Bear Valley watershed is home to native Bonneville cutthroat trout, sage grouse, Utah prairie dog and the Panguitch Lake and Mt. Dutton elk herds. The historic Fishlake cutoff of the Spanish Trail, used by settlers in the 1850’s through 1870’s, traverses the area. The Forest Service guard station located in Bear Valley was built in 1935 and once housed forest rangers during the summer months. The geologically unique Smith Canyon area offers spectacular scenery and is home to cougar, black bear and bats.
