At the base of Antimony Canyon lies the historic town of Widstoe, established by early Mormon settlers. Although the town once boasted 1,100 plus people, now only a few residences and a pioneer cemetery remain. Unpredictable high mountain weather and drought conditions led settlers to evacuate their hopes of raising cattle and of dry farming – within 40 years the town was evacuated. John’s Valley, which runs perpendicular to Escalante Canyon, was named after John Widstoe, one of the town’s forefathers.

Escalante Canyon was once used as a mail route between Widstoe and Escalante, and numerous lumber mills helped build the surrounding towns. The canyon marks the Easternmost boundary of the watershed.
