Despite the scenic beauty this area provides, dense evergreens rob understory of much needed sunlight and many plants die and pile up as deadwood. As this happens, food for wildlife is reduced and the potential for wildfire increases. Historically, forests relied on wildfire as a disturbance to renew growth. Interestingly, the 2002 Sanford fire, when viewed in this sense, is a necessary component of a healthy ecosystem. Its renewing effects will be visible for many generations to come. |
