Red Canyon is one of the most scenic red rock areas within the Upper Sevier Watershed. Nestled among stands of rich ponderosa pine and the sixty million year old Claron Formations, Red Canyon is a popular spot for photographers, hikers, horseback riders and bikers, with over 1.6 million visitors annually. The canyon is composed of dry, sparsely vegetated, sloping terrain that forms an intricate series of deeply cut canyons and river valleys separated by high plateaus. The fantastic ridges and spires, called hoodos, are the result of weathering along vertical fractures within the highly erosive sandstone beds.

Red Canyon lies directly on State Highway 12, a scenic byway whose east–west course links such famous attractions as Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef National Parks and Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument.
