Partnering with The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, 6,000 acres of prime elk habitat were selected for prescribed burning implementation. The Jones Corral project is especially noted for the large-scale treatment area (24,000 total acres), with the prescribed burn distributed across the landscape to create a more desired vegetation mosaic. In addition, the general recovery of vegetation, with new age classes of sagebrush and re-establishment of aspen stands, and low amounts of invasive plants, like cheatgrass, exceeded pre-project expectations. The Jones Corral Habitat Improvement project will be used as an example for future large-scale vegetation recovery treatments.
