As more and more people gravitate to forested lands, the likelihood of an intense wildfire increases. The end result could be loss of life, property, critical natural resources and additional monies spent to protect these resources. The goal of this project is to establish a defensible fire space (DFS) on 4,050 acres of National Forest lands immediately surrounding private lands within existing subdivisions. Treatments in the DFS include removing smaller trees, pruning trees to reduce ladder fuels and burning and/or chipping fuels. Outside the DFS, the Forest Service will also reduce forest fuels on approximately 9,200 acres of National Forest lands southwest of the private subdivisions. In addition, 4,100 acres of aspen stands will be regenerated through the removal of small fir and spruce trees, and underburning.
