By removing, burning or chipping small trees and existing wood, fuels can be reduced to what is known as a Fuel Model 8. A Fuel Model 8 has a fuel load that is reduced to 5-10 tons per acre. Here the fire behavior would be moderate, ground fires, which are easily suppressed and have a beneficial effect on the landscape.
As part of this Fuel Model, tree species that can withstand fires of a certain intensity and frequency, such as aspen and ponderosa pine, would be retained.
