Balancing resource and recreation needs can sometimes be a difficult task for management personnel. Too many roads in one area is not only confusing to the public, because so many of the roads lead to the same place, but also, wildlife and other organisms that depend on cover and downed snags and logs are adversely affected. In addition, eroding dirt roads may increase sediment transport within a watershed. High road densities in the Duck/Swains Access Management Area have prompted U.S. Forest Service personnel to work with the public to help identify critical resource and recreational needs.
