Blue Fly Creek Streambank Stabilization

Dixie National Forest crews and volunteers stabilized streambanks in the Blue Fly Creek and Ahlstrom Hollow drainages of the Sevier River’s Upper East Fork watershed.

Extensive grazing in the early 1900’s resulted in deeply eroded cuts in the soft sediment of the stream, creating what looked like a ragged gully, with bare soil sides and a barren, sediment choked waterway devoid of aquatic habitat.

Crews scalloped out the stream in various places and placed fiber mats around the disturbed areas to offer stability and help the stream retain its former natural condition. Replanted native grass seeds will help stabilize the stream channel, especially during runoff, while reclaimed stock ponds will help relieve high volume stream flows and increase sediment load capture.
