The boreal toad (Bufo boreas boreas), currently listed as a sensitive species in Utah, occurs in several areas on the Dixie and Fishlake National Forest. However, recent declines in populations have led biologists to take a closer look at this species. U.S. Forest Service and Utah Division of Wildlife Resources biologists attach small radio transmitters to toads to determine distribution, home range size and habitat and hibernacula use, as well as determine long-term population trends. On the Dixie Forest, a fenced area serves as a control, while information collected on the Fishlake will help guide future land management decisions.
