Poison Creek Prescribed Fire
The Poison Creek area is valued as summer and winter range for deer and elk. A recent prescribed fire to reduce old age class pinyon-juniper will further enhance wildlife opportunities. Careful monitoring over the next three years will help biologists assess whether the historical structure of native grass and sage has returned in response to fire. Prescribed burning is used as a tool by resource personnel to help manage natural resource areas. A prescribed burn can stimulate sprouting, seed germination, and growth of herbaceous plants. In addition, a burn can make seeds more available to birds by removing long-term litter accumulations. Amazingly, new growth will appear within days of a recent burn!
