Ranch Creek Riparian Project
Ranch Creek contains the only known population of pure strain Bonneville cutthroat trout on the Escalante Ranger District. Once Bonneville cutthroat trout roamed much of the Upper Sevier River drainage; however, now only a few remnant populations remain. Unauthorized stream alterations have resulted in substantial stream down cutting and a reduction in the number of resting pools for fish. A new 2,000 foot fence and cattle crossing as well as upcoming riparian improvement projects and removal of some dispersed camping directly on the stream, will ensure that the stream provides habitat for wildlife, such as fish, songbirds, and big game, as well as continue to be an important source of water for livestock and irrigation.
