Conifer encroachment is often a result of fire suppression. As conifers move into grassy meadows, open stands in old growth forests are replaced by dense, closed-canopy stands, thereby decreasing productive habitat and wildlife biodiversity, and even limiting timber production. Many times the end result of prolonged fire suppression in these dense stands is a raging wildfire!
