Numerous individual houses, subdivisions and entire communities are at risk from wildfire. Creating a Defensible Fire Space (DFS) is one way to reduce potential wildfire destruction in urban interface areas.
In the Mammoth Creek area, DFS zones were created on the north side of the subdivision by thinning, cutting and piling downed wood. Areas on the south side of Mammoth Creek were also thinned and pile burned, and a 400 ft wide DFS zone created around urban areas.
An integral part of this project was an education program to evaluate fire risk to private homes and the creation of a how to video, in conjunction with the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service.
