Rainbow Meadow Reforestation
The rainbow meadows area was one the first hit when the spruce beetle outbreak began in the early 1990’s. However, it is also one of the first areas to be reforested and begin recovery. While it is important to leave some dead and dying trees to be used as habitat by birds, insects and small mammals, the close proximity of summer homes to dead trees also poses safety and fire hazards. After reducing the fuel load, new spruce trees were planted, thinned, and then replanted during 1995-2001, giving birth to a new forest with different age classes of trees. Keep close tabs on this forest, as it grows up right before your eyes.
