Sometimes insecticides are applied to trees in campgrounds and other high-value areas, but many times this is not only timely and expensive, but also ineffective. Outside high value areas, dead trees provide critical wildlife habitat and fallen, decomposing trees provide crucial nutrients to the soil. Three-toed woodpeckers, which feed on spruce beetles, have been observed foraging in this area. Managers and forest users will continue to witness and monitor the effects of this spruce beetle epidemic for many years to come.
