The Yellow Jacket aspen site was burned with prescribed fire in 1999 to stimulate aspen suckering and regeneration. Aspen are important as wildlife forage and habitat, have great scenic value, and serve as important soil stabilizers within a watershed. However, in a mixed-conifer forest aspen sometimes fail to regenerate. Fire plays a significant role in aspen regeneration by disturbing the area and removing the overstory, thus allowing shade-intolerant aspen to thrive.
