In the early 1900s, Native American Navajo children were brought to the Indian School on this site. However, many of the children, taken from Page, Arizona, died of pneumonia because they were not acclimated to the cool mountain temperatures. Today, the site serves as one of only two research facilities designed to study crop and vegetation issues in areas with a short growing season and/or at high elevations. Students from Utah State University conduct research to improve economical and cultural enterprises in the intermountain west.
