Aspen Burn
Half of Sanford Unburned

Looking at this moderately burned stand of aspen, with no ground vegetation, it is hard to remember that more than one-half of the vegetation within the Sanford Fire perimeter was unburned (39,144 acres of 78,159 acres). Oftentimes, as “specialists” in our chosen fields, we look and study our own little piece of the picture, and forget to connect with all the other pieces. In this case, if we could see beyond the picture’s frame, we would see numerous unburned areas. The Sanford landscape is dotted with these mosaics, creating different conditions and age classes of forest. As forest managers and private individuals embark on a new century of forest management, looking at ecosystems on a broader scale, may mean that fire, recreation, and grazing all have interactive roles within the watershed.
