Flood Alters Channel

It is difficult to tell exactly where the stream channel previously existed. The Sanford fire, followed by a 100-year flood event, will undoubtedly alter this area. Even as hydrologists and other resource personnel begin the process of developing long-term monitoring sites, changes can be seen daily – already birch, aspen and cottonwood are starting to sprout; the water is clearer and stream temperatures are dropping. High tech surveying equipment, digital cameras and global positioning units will ensure that they return to the same spot year after year. Perhaps, if we could look forward, we would see a renewed supply of water, fuel wood, forage, wildlife and an even more beautiful place to enjoy.
