Mountain mahogany is highly tolerant to heat and drought; however, it usually doesnt sprout even after a low-intensity fire. This long-lived (avg. 85 years, but as old as 1,350 years) *(FEIS, 2002) is one of the few browse species that meets or exceeds protein requirements for wintering deer and elk its the ice-cream. In addition, numerous small birds and mammals forage in mountain shrub complexes. |
