Mountain mahogany is highly tolerant to heat and drought; however, it usually doesn’t sprout even after a low-intensity fire. This long-lived (avg. 85 years, but as old as 1,350 years) *(FEIS, 2002) is one of the few browse species that meets or exceeds protein requirements for wintering deer and elk – it’s the “ice-cream”. In addition, numerous small birds and mammals forage in mountain shrub complexes.
