Riparian Areas Intact Following Fire

Riparian areas along the Pine Creek drainage remain mostly intact after the fire. However, several patches of curl-leaf mountain mahogany, an important browse for big game, were destroyed. Unlike these sprouting aspen that depend on fire for regeneration, mountain mahogany is not fire-dependent, largely because of its presence along extremely rocky sites, which rarely see fire. As part of the Sanford long-term monitoring plan, biologists will watch these sites closely and may recommend reseeding to reestablish this important browse species.
